Who Is Vincent Van Gogh?

Has anyone known or family with Vincent Van Gogh? He is considered to be the greatest Dutch painter yet he was virtually unknown throughout his life. Who is really this amazing painter? Vincent van Gogh was born on March 30, 1853, in the Netherlands (Vincent van Gogh Biography). He was considered as a post-impressionist painter whose work is known for its emotion, beauty and color. He suffered from mental illness and remained poor and unknown throughout his life. He died in France in July 1890 at the age of 37 due to a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Through his art, it helps him to stay emotional balanced. He began working on his art piece in 1885, known as Potato Eaters. When he went to Paris, van Gogh was inspired by impressionist art with its color and light. He started studying the art and take lessons. He was also influenced by Japanese art and begun studying the eastern philosophy in order to enhance his life and art.

He usually spends time in the village of Arles but dreamed of traveling to Japan. In February 1888, he moved to a little yellow house and spent his money on painting rather than on the hood. This makes him sick, which affected both his physical and psychological health.

After the people in Arles village signed a petition that he was a dangerous man, he moved to Saint-Paul-de-Mausole asylum which he began painting in the hospital gardens. He was invited to exhibit his paintings in Brussels in 1889 which included his Irises and Starry Night artwork.

Vincent Van Gogh is considered to be the greatest Dutch painter yet he never enjoyed the popularity that should be given to him. All over his life, he was able to complete more than 2,100 artworks which consist of 860 oil paintings and 1,300 watercolors, sketches and drawings. Some of his paintings are considered to be one of the most expensive in the world include Irises sold for $53.9 million and Portrait of Dr. Gachet sold for $82.5 million.
